IPONZ NZOO

International Applications for the registration of Trademark are filed through IPONZ which works in that case as New Zealand Office of Origin trademarks (NZOO). International registrations through using Madrid system are possible for more than 90 countries by Filing application through NZOO online form with IPONZ as the Office of Origin. Once application has been registered with WIPO any further changes, updates and subsequent designations can be done directly through WIPO.

International protection of the trademark is possible in two ways:

  1. File individually in each jurisdiction
  2. Use the Madrid system to file application. This allows to file a single application based upon New Zealand application or registration and allows access to 90 countries.

In case the application is applied through IPONZ, it becomes the Office of Origin and certifies the international application. On this certification the international application is forwarded to WIPO. The WIPO examines the formalities side of the application eg. fees and specification. If there are no issues or the issues are resolved then international application will be registered. WIPO will forward your registration on to your chosen designations for them to examine according to their own laws and practices.
